Diversity Common Reader Program Events

The Diversity Common Reader Program has a variety of events coming up.

Friday, February 19, at 5pm, Professor Carter Wilson, Head of NMU's Department of Political Science, will give a virtual lecture entitled "How Racism Hurts White Men: Understanding W. E. B. Du Bois and the Structural Foundation of Racism." Please join Dr. Wilson for this timely and illuminating lecture, with Q&A to follow. All are welcome. 

Critical Information Literacy will be presented by Julie Porterfield, Penn State, and Marcus C. Robyns from the NMU Archives. They will be highlighting the history of Black student protests at NMU on February 24th from 10 AM- noon.

Ruth E. Carter, a costume designer for Black Panther will be presenting on her experience in A Hollywood Career in Costume Design on February 24th at 7 PM. 

I Am Not Your Negro directed by Raoul Peck, will be screened on February 25th at 8:30 PM.

The following day, a discussion of I Am Not Your Negro will take place on February 26th at 7 PM, and will be facilitated by Lesley Larkin, David Robinson from the NMU Department of English.

Undergraduate students at NMU can enter the DCRP Writing Contest, sponsored by Passages North, the renowned literary magazine. Entries (no more than 1000 words) can be of any genre and are due next Monday, February 22. The winning author will receive $100 and be published on PassagesNorth.com.

All members of the NMU and surrounding communities to submit a brief video response to this year's DCRP book selection, Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me. Check out Between the World and Me: Virtual Voices for instructions.
