Native American Student Association Book Recommendations

Explore Native American History and Culture

In collaboration with NMU's Native American Student Assocation, the Lydia M. Olson Library has created a display that highlights Native American history and authors. This display contains a physical collection of book recommendations and a virtual display including an Interview with Bazile Panek and Yrsa Peterson of the Native American Student Association.

A few of the new titles in this collection are listed as following: A Two-Spirit Journey: The Autobiography of a Lesbian Ojibwa-Cree Elder by Ma-Nee Chacabyi, Rez Life by David Treuer, Red Power Rising: The National Indian Youth Council and the Origins of Native Activism by Bradley G. Shrevee, and more.

Native American Student Association member Yrsa Peterson illustrates the poetry anthologies by Denise Sweet as, "One that really features contemporary Native American voices, and I think a lot of times when people think of Native Americans, they think of us as something in the past—something that was, not is. So I think that these books really get contemporary native voices to tell our story today."
