Seasonal Affect Disorder Lamps in the Library

SAD Lamps

As the winter season ramps up, it's common to experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a depression linked to the decrease in sunlight exposure. Light therapy is an option to reverse the effects and improve mental wellness. The SAD Lamps are available at Olson Library on the upper floor.

To properly use the SAD Lamps, it's best to use the light in the morning. If you use the light after 2:00 PM, it may disrupt your circadian rhythm and alter your sleep cycle. Position the light about 20-24 inches away from your eyes. The light must reach your eyes to work. If you tilt your head away or close your eyes, the light won't work.

These lights are not used for tanning and won't have any impact on skin pigmentation. These sessions are most effective in small but consistent increments. Using the lamps for about 20-30 minutes each day is the best way to see improvement over time. Staying longer for 30 minutes may start to cause headaches and eye strain.

Both lamps are located upstairs in the Library. One is by the stairs for open space and the other is near the elevator for more private space. Feel free to use the lamps as needed. If you have any questions, feel free to ask questions at the desk.
