The U.S. and the Holocaust—Ken Burns Webinar

In this 60-minute session, you’ll meet Sarah Botstein, one of the filmmakers; hear about programming resources (film screeners, discussion guides, book lists, panel discussions, poster sets and more) related to the film and the topic; and learn about what some other libraries have done in their communities to promote connections. The presenters will also share tips to help library workers connect with your local PBS station to collaborate on a program.

International Open Access Week 2022

Celebrate International Open Access Week this week. From Monday, October 24th to Sunday, October 30th, learn about the importance of openness by attending virtual events.

Openness can create pathways to more equitable knowledge sharing and serve as a means to address the inequities that shape the impacts of climate change and our response to them.

Two Books, Two Communities—Jean E. Pendziwol

Northern Michigan University will be hosting Pendziwol in conjunction with Two Books, Two Communities on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. Join her in the Northern Center Ballrooms at 7:00 p.m. to hear more about her story and writings. 

Jean E. Pendziwol is the author of more than ten critically-acclaimed books for children, including the Two books, Two Communities 2022 Book Selections: "The Lightkeeper's Daughters" and "Me and You and the Red Canoe".

AMERICANS AND THE HOLOCAUST—A Traveling Exhibit

The Lydia M. Olson Library will host an opening reception for Americans and the Holocaust, a traveling exhibition from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum that examines the motives, pressures and fears that shaped Americans’ responses to Nazism, war and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.

Olson Library was selected as one of 50 U.S. libraries to present the touring version of the Americans and the Holocaust special exhibition, which opened in April 2018 at the Museum in Washington, D.C., during the Museum’s 25th anniversary.

Banned Books in America

Across the country, books are being taken off the shelves of schools and public libraries at an unprecedented rate. EveryLibrary hosted a discussion of authors who have had their books banned from libraries.

What does this mean for America and how does this wave of censorship impact authors and editors? This conversation touches on the personal, political, and educational impacts of book banning and censorship.

Did you know that this website has useful how-to guides on using APA and MLA citations properly? Mike Strahan created these guides for use by any NMU student, staff, or faculty who needs some help with citing outside resources properly.

You can access his guides here.

Mike Strahan is also available to provide tutoring lessons, both in person and on zoom. His availability is as follows:

Mondays: 1 - 4 pm

Tuesdays: 1 - 4 pm

Fridays on call from his office: 12 noon - 4 pm
