LIB 101: Introduction to Information Resources (1 credit)

During this 7-week online class, students will learn how to successfully use library resources including the online catalog (OneSearch), databases, internet resources, and government documents. LIB 101 will help you use these resources for your own research, create a bibliography, and organize your materials. Recommended for freshmen and sophomores.

Working Group Invites Campus Community to celebrate OER Initiative at NMU

This event recognizes the importance of OER in making higher education more affordable and equitable and acknowledges the work of our OER Faculty Learning Community.  NMU President, Dr. Brock Tessman, will give opening remarks, and the OER FLC members will discuss their projects. A reception will follow.

The Lydia M. Olson Library Announces New Open Access Options

The Library has negotiated its first Transformative Agreement with Cambridge University Press. This agreement will not only give faculty and students access to Cambridge journals, but it allows NMU faculty and graduate students to publish in Cambridge University Press' Open Access Journals without author processing charges (APC).  Our second Transformative Agreement with the American Chemical Society will begin in Summer 2024.

Professor Bridger Wilson Selected as ALA Emerging Leader

Emera Bridger Wilson, a librarian at Northern Michigan University's Lydia Olson Library, earned a spot in the esteemed American Library Association's (ALA) Emerging Leaders Program for 2024, an honor bestowed upon only 50 early-career librarians annually. Her acceptance reflects her dedication to enhancing library services and fostering diversity within the profession.

Library Renovation & Relocation

Olson Library will move to Gries Hall during the break following the Fall 2023 semester so that we can start renovations. Library services will be severely limited during the semester break. The Library’s physical collection (books, reserve items, microfilm, etc.) will not be available December 16, 2023 - January 16, 2024. Please plan ahead.

The first floor of Harden Hall (Archives, Center for Teaching and Learning, Fieras, Technology Support Services, etc.) will remain open during the construction.

OER Faculty Learning Community 2023-2024

Northern Michigan University's Open Educational Resource Working Group is thrilled to introduce the 2023-2024 cohort of the OER Faculty Learning Community! This two-year pilot program, funded by SISU, will increase OER use across campus by providing professional development opportunities to members and the wider NMU community. The cohort will be guided and supported in adopting and adapting OER materials for their courses. Together we strive to make NMU more affordable, equitable, and accessible.
