Black History Month: Deaf Black History

In conjunction with Black History Month, Professor Michael Strahan has recently updated his digital resource guide for the Deaf Studies program at NMU to include a new tab of Deaf Black History. Highlighting four sources of anecdotal history, these documents provide insight on deaf literature and language within the African American community and introduce areas of unprecedented historical research.

These digital sources address what it was like to be a part of the Deaf black community within the segregated societies of the 20th-century. Two of the documents are also written and told from the perspective of Deaf African-American women. Supplemental videos of personal interviews and first-hand stories of Black ASL users can also be found within the resources.
