Purpose of the Renovation:

The renovation of Harden Hall will enhance Olson Library’s student and staff spaces, create a learning commons that supports student success and retention, engage students in cutting-edge technology, provide a welcoming space that enhances individual and collaborative studying, and highlight student art. Moving NMU’s Archives and the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center to the library’s main floor will improve student access and promote collaboration. The renovation will also create new classrooms; new office suites for the Honors Program, SISU and SHINE; and new academic department space to relocate the Political Science, Economics, History and Philosophy departments from Gries Hall to the academic core of campus.

Renovation News

Pedestrian access into Harden Hall is limited during the Fall 2024 semester due to increased construction associated with the Harden Renovation project.

On Tuesday, July 11th, the Harden Hall construction area will begin to expand. This will include additional construction fencing being installed in the Academic Mall, the temporary closure of the vestibule between Jamrich and Harden Hall and the re-opening of the north vestibule (closest to Weston Hall).

Progress continues at Northern Michigan University's Harden Hall renovation project, home to the Lydia M. Olson Library.
