Ask Lydia: What do I do with my library books? UPDATE

Do you have some library books that you fear are going to accrue terrible fines while we're all staying home to stay safe? Fear not! You won't be fined for anything while you're quarantining.

Dear Lydia: What am I supposed to do with my library books? They're all stamped due in March, but I can't get to Olson Library to turn them in. HELP!

My Dear Patrons: Don't worry! The physical library is closed, so don't try to return them. We've adjusted ALL due dates to June 29, 2020. We will continue to let you know how we're handling due dates. You won't be assessed any fines during our physical closure as well. Our priority is ensuring the safety of our staff and patrons.

If you feel you MUST return something, you can bring the item(s) to the NMU Police Department in the Services Building on Sugarloaf Ave. They are open 24 hours.

If you have more questions, please email us at library@nmu.edu. We'll be happy to answer any questions. Even though the physical library is closed, we are "open" for virtual assistance Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Reference librarians are on hand to help with your research questions, plus we like to hear from you!

Here is our official statement:

Information:

All library item due dates have been extended to June 29, 2020. There will be no overdue fines assessed at this time. You are encouraged to keep loaned items in your possession. If you choose to return an item, visit the NMU Police Department, located in the Services Building on Sugarloaf Avenue, between Wright and Hawley Streets. They are open 24 hours.
